(Deftones Interview, June 24, 1998)

Rachel: WELCOME BACK. I AM RACHEL PERRY, AND THIS IS THE TIME YOU'VE ALL BEEN WAITING FOR. CHINO AND STEF FROM THE DEFTONES ARE HERE. HOW'S IT GOING, GUYS?

GOING GOOD.

WE'RE DOING GREAT.

Rachel: YOU'RE ON THE BAND'S WARPED TOUR RIGHT NOW. ARE THEY TREATING YOU WELL? ARE YOU EATING WELL AND EVERYTHING?

WE AIN'T EATING WELL, BUT...

NOT EATING WELL.

IT'S ALL RIGHT. WE JUST DO IT. WE'VE DONE THE TOUR, LIKE, THREE YEARS, AND EVERY YEAR, IT JUST GETS WORSE.

Rachel: THE FOOD? WHAT'S THE FOOD LIKE?

WELL, ACTUALLY, CANADA IS GOOD. IT'S A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT CATERING COMPANY HERE. BUT WHEN WE GO BACK TO THE STATES, WE'LL BE SUBJECTED TO JUST SMALL, DISGUSTING RATIONS OF DISGUSTING FOOD.

Rachel: GRUEL?

I THINK PEOPLE IN JAIL GET BETTER FOOD.

Rachel: PEOPLE IN JAIL GET BETTER FOOD? (Laughing)

I THINK SO.

Rachel: OKAY. NOW, THE TOUR IS SORT OF LIKE A SKATE MECCA. IT'S, LIKE, GOT THE WHOLE MUSIC AND SKATE GOING ON. SKATEBOARDING, DO YOU GUYS SKATE STILL?

WE'RE NOT GOOD, BUT WE DO IT.

Rachel: DO THEY LET YOU SKATE AT ALL ON TOUR?

YEAH. I MEAN I WAS SKATING LAST NIGHT FOR A FEW HOURS AND ENDED UP HURTING SOMEBODY, BESIDES MYSELF. I HURT MYSELF, TOO, YOU KNOW. IT'S COOL. I MEAN, IT'S KIND OF HARD TO DO IT ALL THE TIME BECAUSE, YOU KNOW, THERE'S LIKE A LOT OF PEOPLE TRY TO...

Rachel: MOB YOU?

GET IN YOUR BUSINESS WHEN YOU'RE JUST TRYING TO HAVE A GOOD TIME. WE SPEND A LOT OF TIME ON THE BUS. IT'S BEEN REALLY HOT, TOO. SO WE'VE BEEN JUST TRYING TO STAY COOL ON THE BUS.

Rachel: SO WHAT'S THE APPEAL WITH SKATEBOARDING? LIKE, I THOUGHT EVERYBODY THOUGHT IT WAS GOING TO DIE OUT BACK IN LIKE THE '60s.

I'VE BEEN DOING IT SINCE I WAS 11 YEARS OLD. I MEAN, I JUST LOVE TO DO IT. IT'S ONE THING I LOVE TO DO. HEAVY MUSIC OR LOUD MUSIC, WHATEVER, I THINK GOES HAND IN HAND WITH, YOU KNOW, EXTREME SPORTS.

I HARDLY EVER SKATE ANY MORE. I RIDE MY BIKE.

Rachel: YOU RIDE YOUR BIKE. DO YOU HAVE A B.M.X. BIKE?

UM-HMM.

Rachel: DO YOU GO DOWN THE THING? DO YOU EVER STAND AT THE TOP AND DROP IN?

HE CAN'T DO IT.

I DON'T DO THAT YET. I COULD START AT THE BOTTOM AND GO UP THOUGH.

HE GOES TO THE STREET COURSE AND GETS IN THE WAY OF EVERYBODY, LIKE ON HIS BIKE AND GO OUT THERE LIKE HE'S GOING TO DO A BUNCH OF TRICKS; AND HE'LL JUST, LIKE, RIDE OVER A BUMP, LOOK AROUND AND MAKE SURE EVERYBODY'S LOOKING AT HIM.

SKATERS ARE PUNKS. ALL THEY DO IS SNAKE AND BOGART THE WHOLE THING ALL DAY LONG.

Rachel: DO YOU HAVE TATTOOS? LIKE, I FIND SKATEBOARDERS AND ROCK 'N' ROLL, YOU KNOW, IT'S ALL ABOUT TATTOOS. WHO'S THE SMELLIEST BAND ON THE TOUR?

OUR BASS PLAYER IS PROBABLY THE SMELLIEST OF ALL THE BANDS PROBABLY.

YEAH.

Rachel: WHO HAS THE MOST TATTOOS?

OUT OF OUR BAND?

Rachel: NO, OUT OF THE WHOLE THING.

PROBABLY RANCID.

DEFINITELY RANCID.

THEY'RE LIKE, YOU KNOW, TRADITIONAL PUNK ROCK. THEY GOT LIKE ALL THE SWALLOWS AND SPIDERWEBS AND THE STARS AND, YOU KNOW, TRADITIONAL TATTOOS. THEY ALL GOT 'EM.

Rachel: HIGHLIGHTS, TOUR HIGHLIGHTS; ANYTHING INTERESTING?

WE CAN'T TALK ABOUT THAT.

Rachel: OH, OKAY. NOTHING?

THEY WERE CALLING ME "SPIDER BOY" LAST NIGHT. I WAS NAKED OUT IN FRONT OF THE WINDOW OF THE BUS. (Girls screaming outside)

Rachel: THEY SEEM TO LIKE THAT. YOU START A NEW TREND WITH THE BUN. SEE THE GUY AT THE WINDOW? HE'S GOT THE BUN. STEALING YOUR STYLES. SO THE ALBUM, THIS IS "AROUND THE FUR," AND IT SOUNDS A LITTLE BIT MORE COHESIVE; NOT AS MANY INDIVIDUAL SORT OF GUITAR/BASS RIFFS. WERE YOU GOING FOR A MORE POLISHED SOUND ON THE ALBUM?

I THINK IT WAS A NATURAL PROGRESSION FROM THE FIRST RECORD. WE'VE BEEN TOURING PROBABLY FOR ABOUT A YEAR AND A HALF, ALMOST TWO YEARS ON THE FIRST RECORD, AND WE WERE JUST READY TO MAKE A NEW RECORD. WE GOT IN THE STUDIO, AND EVERYTHING JUST CAME OUT REALLY EASILY. THE FIRST RECORD, THERE WAS A LOT OF PRESSURE. YOU KNOW, YOU HAVE TO MAKE -- YOU'RE ON A BIG RECORD COMPANY WITH A BIG PRODUCER. YOU KNOW, EVERYTHING IS LIKE -- THERE'S A LOT MORE PRESSURE I THINK. AND A LOT OF PEOPLE SAY YOUR SECOND RECORD, YOU GOT MORE PRESSURE, BUT I FELT SO AT EASE IN THE STUDIO, AND EVERYTHING JUST CAME OUT, YOU KNOW.

IT WAS TOTALLY EASIER.

I THINK IT SHOWS ON THE RECORD. IT MAKES IT SOUND, YOU KNOW, A LITTLE BIT MORE FLOWING THAN THE FIRST ONE.

Rachel: I THINK ALL THE SONGS SORT OF FIT TOGETHER REALLY WELL ON THAT ALBUM. LYRICALLY, WHERE WERE YOU HEADED ON THIS?

I KIND OF WENT BACK TO MY ROOTS. LIKE, A LOT OF NEW WAVE MUSIC WAS ALWAYS MY INFLUENCE GROWING UP, LIKE THE SMITHS. I LOVE MORRISSEY'S LYRICS; ROBERT SMITH FROM THE CURE; DEPECHE MODE. I MEAN, THAT'S THE MUSIC I GREW UP LISTENING TO AND THAT'S THE MUSIC I STILL LOVE. IT'S PROBABLY MY FAVOURITE MUSIC; AND, LYRICALLY, I'M REALLY INFLUENCED BY THEM. AS FAR AS THE WAY I -- THE WAY I, I GUESS, DELIVER, I GUESS, IS PROBABLY INFLUENCED A LOT BY, LIKE, H.R. FROM THE BAD BRAINS, OR, LIKE, MIKE PATTON FROM FAITH NO MORE. THERE'S TWO OF MY BIG INFLUENCES; AT LEAST LIKE SOUND AND DELIVERANCE, YOU KNOW.

Rachel: RIGHT. I THINK EVERYBODY SORT OF -- YOU CAN SEE WHERE THE BAD BRAINS AND EVERYTHING IS COMING FROM, BUT DO YOU THINK YOUR FANS ARE KIND OF SURPRISED ABOUT THE DEPECHE MODE AND MORRISSEY?

I DON'T KNOW. I THINK A REAL FAN WOULD KNOW. YOU CAN READ IT IN THE -- LIKE, OUR LATEST SINGLE, "BE QUIET AND DRIVE" IS, LIKE, TAKEN STRAIGHT FROM "NEVER LET ME DOWN" BY DEPECHE MODE. IT'S KIND OF WHAT THE SONG IS ABOUT, JUST GETTING -- YOU KNOW, JUST LEAVING EVERYTHING BEHIND, JUST DRIVING, YOU KNOW, REAL FREE KIND OF FEELING. SUMMERTIME KIND OF VIBE.

Rachel: YEAH. I MEAN, I WAS LISTENING TO IT, AND I DON'T KNOW ABOUT THIS. IT SEEMS LIKE YOU GOT A COUPLE OF LOVE SONGS ON THERE.

TOTALLY. I MEAN, MOST OF THEM ARE ACTUALLY. I THINK THE FIRST RECORD, THERE WAS A LOT MORE ANGER ON IT. AND I THINK WHEN YOU'RE YOUNG -- YOU KNOW, A LOT OF THOSE SONGS WERE WRITTEN WHEN I WAS 16 YEARS OLD. AND WHEN YOU'RE 16, YOU FEEL LIKE THE WHOLE WORLD IS AGAINST YOU, YOU KNOW WHAT I'M SAYING? AND AS I GET OLDER, YOU KIND OF MELLOW OUT AND -- YOU KNOW WHAT I'M SAYING?

Rachel: YEAH.

THINGS JUST START TO BECOME MORE IMPORTANT THAN ALWAYS WORRYING ABOUT WHAT PEOPLE ARE THINKING ABOUT YOU AND WHATEVER, AND YOU KIND OF JUST START TO -- YOU KNOW, YOU FIND LOVE AND THEN YOU'RE LOST IN IT, AND THEN IT'S ALL OVER THE RECORD. YOU WOULDN'T KNOW BECAUSE IT'S REALLY HEAVY, BUT IT'S TOUGH LOVE. (Laughing)

Rachel: SO THE FANS ARE ENJOYING THE SHOWS?

OH, DEFINITELY.

Rachel: YEAH. YOU GOT -- YOU'RE ON TONIGHT AT -- DO YOU KNOW WHAT TIME?

8:15. WE'RE LAST.

Rachel: 8:15 AT THE DOCKS FOR THE WARPED TOUR. THE SPECIALS WERE IN HERE EARLIER, AND I NOTICED THEY HAD SOME WARPED TOUR SOCKS. DID THEY GIVE YOU SOCKS TO KEEP YOU CLEAN?

THEY DON'T GIVE US NOTHING, MAN.

Rachel: YOU DIDN'T GET SOCKS?

NO. WE DIDN'T GET NO SOCKS. WE GOT WATCHES. ACTUALLY, I DON'T HAVE MINE, BUT WE GOT WATCHES AND WE GOT SHOES. AND WHAT ELSE DID WE GET? THEY GAVE US, LIKE, LITTLE THINGS LIKE THAT. BUT I USUALLY DON'T WEAR THAT STUFF ANYWAYS BECAUSE EVERYBODY ON THE TOUR HAS IT. SO IF YOU GET FREE STUFF AND IT'S, LIKE, REALLY YOU DON'T WANT TO BE LIKE EVERYBODY ELSE SO YOU TRY TO REBEL AND BE LIKE THE REAL PUNK ROCKERS.

Rachel: REBELLION!

I THINK WE'RE THE REAL PUNK ROCKERS ON THE TOUR.

Rachel: YOU THINK SO?

YEAH, I THINK SO.

Rachel: I THINK SO FOR SURE. SO YOU'RE HERE TODAY. WHERE ARE YOU TOMORROW? MONTREAL?

YEAH.

Rachel: AND QUEBEC CITY AFTER THAT, AND THEN BUFFALO ON THE 28th. SO I THINK WE'RE GOING TO GO TO YOUR VIDEO RIGHT NOW, "BE QUIET AND DRIVE."

COOL. ALL RIGHT.

Rachel: DID YOU EVER ELECTROCUTE ANYBODY WHEN YOU WERE SPRAYING THE WATER ON THEM?

NO. WE WEREN'T REALLY PLUGGED IN. IT'S FAKE. IT'S ALL FAKE. I WASN'T EVEN REALLY SINGING. I WAS JUST GOING -- IT'S ALL FAKE. ALL OF THE PEOPLE GOTTA KNOW IT'S FAKE. THE WHOLE VIDEO, IT'S FAKE. WE'RE NOT EVEN UNDERNEATH A BRIDGE.

I REALLY PLAYED, BUT I GOT YELLED AT.

WE WERE PLAYING WITH THE BIG BLUE SCREEN BEHIND US AND THEY MADE IT ALL...

Rachel: THEY KEYED IN...

I MEAN, IT WASN'T EVEN A REAL HOSE IN MY HAND.

IT WASN'T EVEN IN HIS HAND. (Laughter)

THEY JUST PUT IT IN THERE.

Rachel: OKAY.

IT WASN'T EVEN ME. THAT WAS RALPH MACCHIO.

Rachel: WHAT WAS THAT?

IT WASN'T EVEN ME IN THE VIDEO. IT WAS RALPH MACCHIO.

Rachel: HEY, IT'S ALL FAKE THEN.

YEAH.

Rachel: IT'S ALL FAKE. SHOULD WE WATCH THE FAKE VIDEO?

SURE.

Rachel: OKAY. "BE QUIET AND DRIVE" WITH THE DEFTONES. (Video played)
